The Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN), named after talk-show presenter Oprah Winfrey, is an American specialty channel produced by Harpo Productions and Discovery Communications. It debuted on January 1, 2011 in approximately 80 million homes, replacing the former Discovery Health Channel.

OWN programming includes a mix of original programs, strips, specials, original documentaries and acquired movies. OWN transmits broadcasts in both standard-definition resolution (480i) and high-definition resolution (1080i). AT&T, Dish Network, Cablevision and Bright House currently carry the channel in high definition in all their markets, with Charter Communications, Cox, and Time Warner Cable carrying the HD feed of the channel only in some of their markets.

Oprah Winfrey announced her syndicated talk show would end on May 25, 2011, and that it would not continue on OWN thereafter.[2] However, she will host a new prime-time show on the channel called Oprah's Next Chapter two or three times a week.[1] Winfrey has committed to appearing in a minimum of 70-hours per year on the network.[3]

On April 8, 2010 several new shows for the channel were announced including Visionaries: Inside the Creative Mind; Your OWN Show: Oprah's Search for the Next TV Star; The Gayle King Show; Why Not? with Shania Twain; Season 25: Oprah Behind the Scenes; Breaking Down the Bars; Enough Already! with Peter Walsh; In the Bedroom with Dr. Laura Berman; Our America with Lisa Ling; Kidnapped By the Kids; Miracle Detectives; The Swell Life; Searching For...; Oprah Presents Master Class, Ask Oprah's All-Stars, Ryan and Tatum: The O' Neals, The Judds, Anna & Kristina's Grocery Bag, and Oprah's Next Chapter. Mystery Diagnosis and Deliver Me, both carryovers from Discovery Health, will remain on the schedule.[1]

On July 26, 2010 Sarah, Duchess of York announced that she would star in her own New York based show titled Finding Sarah.

On August 5, 2010, Rosie O'Donnell announced that she will host a new daytime talk show, The Rosie Show on the channel.[4]

Movies and reruns of Dr. Phil complete the schedule.[5] Reruns of older TLC shows have also been included to fill the daytime schedule, including Curtis Stone's Take Home Chef, Say Yes to the Dress, Cash Cab (from sister Discovery Channel), What Not To Wear, 10 Years Younger, I Shouldn't Be Alive (from sister channel Animal Planet) and Untold Stories of the E.R. (which had also aired on Discovery Health).

In August 2011, Oprah Winfrey announced the start, in October 2011, of her Oprah's Lifeclass, showing inspiring guests from her show. On the same day, she announced a free ticket and Lifeclass Journal giveaway for the first 1 million Americans to join the class online.

International versions

In Canada, the former Canadian version of Discovery Health, owned by Shaw Media, will not be following its U.S. equivalent in adopting the OWN format; that channel has now moved to a reality-based format branded as Twist TV.[6] Instead, Corus Entertainment has agreed to launch a Canadian version of OWN in early 2011.[7] It was later confirmed that the channel known as Viva was rebranded as OWN on March 1, 2011. During January and February 2011, selected OWN programming was airing on both Viva and the co-owned W Network.[8] Both Shaw Media and Corus share common ownership interests from the J.R. Shaw family, but are considered separate companies.[9] Oprah revealed to New York Times that she's in final negotiations to release OWN in Brazil and Argentina. [10]

Viewership

During its first week after launch in January 2011, OWN was watched by an average of 505,000 viewers.[11] In February 2011, viewership fell to an average of 135,000, with about 45,000 viewers in the network's target 25-54 year-old female demographic.[12]

On March 8, 2011, OWN announced that it will undergo a major overhaul.[13] On May 6, 2011, Discovery executive Peter Liguori replaced Christina Norman as CEO.[14]

On July 13, 2011, Oprah Winfrey announced she will be taking over as CEO and Chief Creative Officer (CCO) of the network.[15]
